The History of the Historic Kenwood Neighborhood of St. Petersburg, FL

The Kenwood Historic District of St. Pete was officially formed in 2003. Located just west of downtown St. Petersburg, Historic Kenwood is bordered by 9th Avenue North, 1st Avenue North, 19th Street North, and 34th Street North.

Historic Kenwood is perhaps best known for its architecture. The 375-acre residential neighborhood contains 2,303 historic buildings. Historic bungalows make up about 50% of the buildings in the area, although many architectural styles are present.

Historic Kenwood was originally developed by Philadelphia resident Charles Hall. Back in 1912, Hall purchased 160 acres of avocado groves and subdivided the acreage into individual lots. His first model home was built in 1918 and is now called Craftsman House Gallery.

Kenwood is known for being St. Petersburg’s first suburb and first neighborhood to house year-round residents, rather than downtown residents who often moved north for the summer months. The majority of Historic Kenwood’s homes were built between the 1920s and 1950s. Some residences were even moved to the neighborhood from other districts.

After the 1950s, many residents began moving to newer suburbs. However, the Kenwood neighborhood was revitalized in the 90s. In 2003, Historic Kenwood earned its spot in the National Register of Historic Places.
