The History of the Downtown (North Downtown and University Park) Neighborhood of St. Petersburg
St. Petersburg itself was incorporated as a city in 1903–when, according to legend, two owners flipped a coin to determine who would name the city. To develop the downtown waterfront district, the city dredged a deeper shipping channel and improved port facilities. Throughout the 1920s, tourism in the area began to flourish, and St. Petersburg became a principal city for railroad travel from the midwest and northeast.
After the Great Depression, the city experienced another population boom as retirees settled in the area. More recently, Major League Baseball located a team in the Tampa Bay area. Today, the Tampa Bay Rays are located in downtown St. Petersburg.
The North Downtown and University Park neighborhoods of St. Petersburg are also home to the city’s central business district, the University of South Florida St. Petersburg, and many of the area’s historical and cultural attractions.
Today, University Park and North Downtown are home to many young professionals. The area itself offers an urban environment filled with bars, restaurants, coffee shops, and shopping options. The North Downtown historic district has 2,975 historical buildings that are recognized today.

Slip and Fall Accidents
Property owners are responsible for maintaining their property. If you slipped and fell on someone else’s property, the business owner may be responsible for your damages. That’s true whether you were injured on the University campus, dining in a restaurant, or shopping downtown.
After a fall, it’s important to contact a personal injury lawyer quickly. That way, we can conduct a prompt investigation before the owner erases any evidence about the dangerous conditions that caused your fall.
Medical Malpractice
Thousands of patients are hurt because of medical mistakes every year. If you were harmed because of negligent medical care at Bayfront health, St. Petersburg General, or another medical facility, our lawyers can help.
Our law firm has the experience and resources to identify the cause of your injuries. We’ll do everything we can to hold the responsible parties accountable.
Workers’ Compensation
You shouldn’t have to worry about how to pay the bills if you were injured on the job. Whether you were hurt in a construction site accident or in a downtown office building, our lawyers are here to help you file a workers’ compensation claim and fight for the money you deserve.
Proving Liability in a Downtown (North Downtown and University Park) Personal Injury Case
To recover damages after an accident, you’ll have to prove that someone else was responsible. In most cases, that means proving negligence.
The four elements of a negligence case include:
- A legal duty of care
- Breach of duty
- Causation
- Damages
In plain English, you’ll need evidence. While you focus on getting better, our lawyers will search for video footage, witnesses, and more. We’ll even hire experts and specialists to strengthen your case.
Statute of Limitations in Florida Personal Injury Cases
Florida state law limits the amount of time you have to file a personal injury lawsuit. The state’s statute of limitations was recently changed for most personal injury cases. By default, you’ll have two years to submit a lawsuit if your accident took place on 3/24/2023 or later, or four years if it happened prior to that date.
However, there are exceptions to these deadlines. Reach out to a personal injury lawyer to clarify the deadline for your specific case.
Damages Available in Downtown (North Downtown and University Park) Personal Injury Cases
Insurance companies want to pay you as little as possible. They’ll often resort to scare tactics and manipulation to make that happen.

Accident victims are often entitled to compensation for:
