Road Name Change Honors Principal Killed in Crash

Can one person truly make a difference? Of course! For evidence, look no further than this story of a Pasco County student who improved road safety in honor of her school’s principal.

14-year-old Makayla, a student at Crews Lake Middle School near Spring Hill, saw that speeding drivers were a problem around her school. To bring awareness to this issue, she wrote to WFLA, a local news station, who picked up her story. Once the story aired, Pasco County stepped in with some much-needed improvements. They provided a school zone sign, speeding signs, and a traffic light, helping to make the road safer.

Throughout her journey, Makayla had the support of her school’s principal, Adam Kennedy. Around Crews Lake Middle School, Principal Kennedy was a popular figure, known for encouraging his students to never give up. Tragically, Kennedy was killed in a car accident in 2017. He left behind a wife, two young children, and students like Makayla, who saw Kennedy as a role model.

After Principal Kennedy’s death, Makayla decided that her road improvement project was not quite over. She approached Pasco County officials with a new idea:changing the name of the road outside the school should be changed to honor Principal Kennedy. Her passion paid off again – the road outside the school was recently changed to Adam Kennedy Way. It’s a perfect tribute to the beloved principal, who would surely be proud of his young student’s accomplishment.

How Can You Make a Difference?

The loss of an important community figure like Principal Adam Kennedy is always a tragedy, as well as a reminder to be safe on the roads. But this story, thanks to one passionate student and the support of her community, has an inspirational ending. Like Makayla, you can also dream big when aspiring to improve safety in your own community! What can you do today to make the roads a safer place?
